Summertime means it’s “Game On!” In this virtual summer camp, campers will be playing and analyzing all kinds of board and video games. Throughout the week, campers will also be applying what they’ve discovered about games to create a new board game prototype of their very own! Pop Culture Classroom is here from Denver to prove that games aren’t JUST fun. They also help develop critical and creative literacy skills. Experience ground-breaking educational programming centered around one of our very favorite summer pastimes: Games!
How will virtual summer camp work?
Campers and Instructors will meet twice per day on Zoom. During this time, campers will build community with one another and receive direct instruction. Password protected meetings will take place at 9:30am and 3:00pm for 1 – 1.5 hours per session, totaling no more than 3 hours per day. During this time, campers will also receive tasks to complete during off-camera hours to improve game design skills and work toward creating their own prototype.
In addition to Zoom, camps will also utilize Edmodo – an educational communication, collaboration, and coaching platform used and trusted by schools and parents all over the world. If desired, students can join our private and monitored camp group. Here, students can continue to build community and share work while not together on Zoom. Using Edmodo, campers will be able to:

See tasks they may have missed if unable to attend a Zoom session
Access additional resources posted by instructors
Post questions, comments, or work-in-progress on a monitored message board
Respond to others’ post

FAQ:
Who can join this camp? Any child, ages 10-14, interested in learning about board game creation regardless of prior skill or experience.
What will my child need to participate? A device capable of running Zoom and basic art supplies such as pencils, paper, markers and colored pencils, cardboard, tape, glue, etc. An orientation e-mail will be sent approximately 2 weeks prior to camp with a suggested materials list. However, campers will be encouraged to use recycled and repurposed materials found around the house!
Does my child have to use Edmodo? Not at all. We are aiming to replicate the community feel of a summer camp as best as possible. However, no camper is required to use Edmodo if they or their parents feel uncomfortable.
When will I receive links to Zoom and Edmodo? Parents can expect to receive links to both platforms in the days leading up to the start of camp.
Who can I contact with more questions? You can reach out to emily@museumofboulder.org
How many campers will be allowed in the camp? Each camp session will be capped at 20 campers.
Are there scholarships available for camps? Yes, if you receive services from one of our partner organizations or have a SNAP Card, you are pre-approved for a free camp spot
What if my child cannot attend a scheduled Zoom session? Will they be recorded? We will do our best to record Zoom sessions. However, if a camper misses a session, they will be able to find resources and connect with others on Edmodo.
Can I register more than one child? Yes, you may! However, each child will need their own registration, even if using the same device to access Zoom and Edmodo.
How much parent involvement will be necessary? Parent involvement might be needed to initially teach campers how to use Zoom and Edmodo. However, we are hoping that necessary parent involvement will be at a minimum after the first meeting or two. While parents may want to get involved with their campers board game creation, we encourage campers to rely on and build their own creativity and problem-solving skills.
