Pioneers

Open Studios and the Museum of Boulder present Pioneers, a film by Erika Volchan O’Conor, documenting the careers and art of four early stereotype-defying women Plein Air artists in the Rocky Mountains, Monday, June 7th. This screening is a feature of Open Studios’ 2021 Boulder County Plein Air Event, a week of art-making outdoors, June 4 – 11.

Artists, Helen Henderson Chain (1849-1892), Jean Wirt Sherwood (1846-1938), Muriel Sibell Wolle (1898-1977), and Eve Drewelowe (1899-1988), defied discriminatory social norms in pursuit of creative freedom and greater social opportunity. Their lives exemplify the significant role that women across the American West have played in spearheading progressive social and cultural reform in their communities.
