Poison: The Perfect Murder Weapon?
June 28, 2019 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm
Explore the world of death by poison from a forensic point of view.
Every true crime aficionado knows poisons can be the ultimate stealth murder weapon. Deaths can easily be attributed to illness or other natural causes, and, in some cases, years may pass before a poison death is identified and an investigation is initiated—if it’s ever identified at all.
Join Atlas Obscura Denver for an in-depth discussion with a seasoned toxicologist about the crucial role of forensic science in murder-by-poisoning cases. Dr. David J. George will review and discuss features of poison homicide investigations, using examples drawn from contemporary murder cases, ranging from the ordinary to the downright bizarre. This is a unique opportunity to hear an experienced expert discuss poisons and poisoning from the forensic investigative point of view.
Dr. George is a toxicologist specializing in criminal poisoning and the author of Poisons: An Introduction for Forensic Investigators. He was an adjunct professor in the Division of Criminal Forensic Studies at Florida Gulf Coast University and has participated in training programs for crime scene investigators and emergency medical first responders. Previously, he was a faculty member at the University of Utah Medical Center, director of the University’s Center for Human Toxicology, and associate director of the Intermountain Regional Poison Control Center.
