Becoming American: An Immigration Film and Discussion Series

An event every week that begins at 6:00pm on Tuesday, happening 6 times

For six weeks, we will be exploring the history of immigration in the United States through documentary film and discussion. Join your neighbors for an informed discussion of immigration issues against the backdrop of our immigration history.

Sessions will be moderated by Dr. Nicholas Villanueva, Assistant Professor of Ethnic Studies at the University of Colorado, Boulder. Additionally, participants will be able to view a local art exhibit, The Silhouette Project: Stories of Immigrants, Refugees and Dreamers, by Dona Laurita, during each event. 

Each session will include one or two film screenings, followed by a group discussion. The topics for each week are:

Tuesday, January 22 | The Century of Immigration: 1820-1924

Tuesday, January 29 | Promise and Prejudice

Tuesday, February 5 | Between Two Worlds: Identity and Acculturation

Tuesday, February 12 | Help Wanted? Immigration and Work

Tuesday, February 19 | Family and Community

Tuesday, February 26 | Popular Culture and Immigration

Becoming American: A Documentary Film and Discussion Series on Our Immigration Experience is a project of City Lore in collaboration with the Immigration and Ethnic History Society and the International Coalition of the Sites of Conscience.
